Carpet Damage: Repair, Patch, or Replace?
Burns, stains, and loose seams can often be repaired. Worn, matted carpet across a whole room usually cannot.

Carpets suffer spills, pets, and furniture marks. Many problems look worse than they are.
Before replacing a room of carpet, consider whether a repair will do.
Repairable problems
- Small burns and stains — patch with an offcut
- Loose seams — reglue with seam tape
- Ripples — restretch with a power stretcher
- Snags and pulled loops — trim or reset
- Furniture dents — steam and brush up the pile
Patching
Use a leftover offcut or take a piece from inside a wardrobe. Cut out the damaged area and the patch with the same template, match the pile direction, and stick down with carpet tape. Done well, patches are hard to spot.
When to replace
Replace when carpet is worn thin in walkways, the pile is permanently matted, there are widespread stains or pet odours that soak into the underlay, or the carpet is very old and holding allergens.
Do not forget the underlay
Good underlay makes carpet feel better and last longer. Replace underlay with new carpet; worn underlay shortens a new carpet’s life.
