🔧 Repair or Replace

Should You Repair or Replace Your Front Door?

Sticking, draughty doors can often be adjusted. Rotten frames and failing locks may justify a new one.

Your front door affects security, energy efficiency, and first impressions.

Many problems are fixable with small adjustments.

1

Common fixes

  • Sticking — tighten or adjust hinges; plane wooden doors slightly
  • Draughts — replace weatherstripping and add a door sweep
  • Stiff lock — lubricate with a graphite or PTFE lubricant
  • uPVC door dropped — adjust hinges and keeps
  • Faded paint — sand and repaint
2

Security upgrades

Upgrade to a lock meeting recognised security standards, especially on uPVC and composite doors where cylinder locks can be vulnerable to snapping. Add a door chain or viewer.

3

Signs it is time to replace

Rotten wooden frames, warped doors that cannot be adjusted, cracked panels, condensation in double-glazed units, or poor insulation can justify a new door.

4

Choosing a replacement

Composite doors combine insulation with security. Timber looks traditional but needs upkeep. Ask about energy ratings and installation, and check any rules for listed buildings or conservation areas.
