Broken Oven: Repair or Replace?
Elements, thermostats, and door seals are usually cheap to fix. Control boards and rusted cavities are a different story.

Ovens are mechanically simple compared with many appliances, which means many faults can be fixed for a fraction of the cost of a new one.
Knowing which part has failed is the key to deciding.
Common, affordable repairs
- Oven not heating — often a failed element, especially the fan-oven ring element
- Uneven or wrong temperature — thermostat or temperature sensor
- Heat escaping — worn door seal
- Fan noisy or not spinning — fan motor
- Light out — bulb (use an oven-rated bulb)
When replacement makes sense
If the main control board or touch controls fail on an oven more than ten years old, or the inner cavity is rusting through, replacement is usually the better investment. The same applies if the oven has had several repairs in a short time.
Gas and electric safety
Gas ovens must only be repaired by a registered gas engineer. Electric ovens are often wired directly into a dedicated circuit, and work on that wiring should be done by a qualified electrician. If you smell gas, turn off the supply, open windows, and contact your gas emergency number.
Getting it fixed
Note the model number (usually on a plate around the door frame) before calling an engineer, so they can bring the right parts. Ask for a fixed price for parts and labour. If a new oven is the answer, check whether your current one is a standard size to avoid kitchen alterations.
