Preparing Your Home and Garden for High Winds
Most storm damage comes from loose objects, weak roof tiles, and falling branches. A pre-storm check reduces the risk.

Strong winds can lift tiles, topple fences, and turn garden furniture into projectiles.
When a storm is forecast, a short walk around your property can prevent expensive damage — and injuries.
Outside the home
- Bring in or tie down garden furniture, trampolines, bins, and planters
- Close and secure sheds, gates, and garage doors
- Move cars away from trees if you can
- Check for loose roof tiles, ridge tiles, or flashing (from the ground)
- Clear gutters so heavy rain can drain
Trees and branches
Dead or overhanging branches are a common cause of damage. Have large trees inspected by a qualified tree surgeon before storm season rather than waiting for a forecast. Never climb a ladder in high winds.
During the storm
Stay indoors and away from windows. Do not go outside to fix damage while winds are strong. Keep phones charged and a torch handy in case of power cuts, and keep away from fallen power lines.
Afterwards
Check for damage once it is safe, photograph anything for your insurer, and arrange temporary repairs to stop further water getting in. See our guide to checking your home after a storm for a full list.
