Getting Your Home Ready for Snow and Ice

Snow loads, ice, and freezing pipes cause most winter damage. Prepare before the first cold snap.

Heavy snow and freezing temperatures can cause frozen pipes, roof leaks, and dangerous paths.

A short checklist reduces the risk.

1

Pipes and heating

  • Insulate pipes in lofts, garages, and outside walls
  • Know where your stopcock is
  • Keep heating on low if you go away
  • Service the boiler before winter
  • Isolate outside taps — see our outdoor tap guide
2

Roof and gutters

Clear gutters so meltwater can drain. In very snowy climates, heavy snow can strain roofs; use a roof rake from the ground rather than climbing up. Ice dams can force water under roofing; see our ice dams guide.

3

Paths and driveways

Stock up on grit or rock salt and a shovel. Clear snow early before it compacts into ice. Avoid using hot water, which can refreeze.

4

Emergency kit

Keep torches, batteries, blankets, a phone power bank, and some food and water in case of power cuts. Check on neighbours who may need help.
